Classic Spyderco Character
The Spyderco C42 Viele is a refined gentleman’s folder that blends understated style with practical everyday usability. Designed by custom knifemaker Howard Viele, it reflects a classic approach to pocketknife design, favouring clean lines, slim proportions and comfortable ergonomics over overt tactical styling. Its rounded Micarta handle scales and narrow profile create a knife that carries discreetly while remaining comfortable during extended use. Although its elegant appearance suggests a dress knife, the Viele proves surprisingly capable as an everyday cutting tool, offering a balanced feel and secure grip that encourages regular carry rather than occasional display.
This example has been well carried and used and bears many faint scratches commensurate with normal use. The edge is unsharpened with a flat spot near the sharpening choil. The action is beautifully smooth and lockup is solid. No box.
"This beautiful old-school Spyderco needs a new pocket to call home." - Mr. Narwhal
Refined
Technically, the C42 features a full-flat-ground blade in VG-10 and liner lock construction, paired with Spyderco’s signature round opening hole for quick one-handed deployment. Early production examples also incorporated an adjustable eccentric pivot pin, an innovative feature that allowed the lock engagement to be fine-tuned over time, maintaining solid lockup as the knife wore in. The blade geometry offers precise control for light utility and detailed cutting tasks, while the thick, contoured Micarta scales enhance comfort during prolonged use. Though later designs from Spyderco refined the formula further, the Viele remains a distinctive example of the company’s early collaborations with custom makers, combining practical engineering with the timeless character expected of a true gentleman’s folder.
