Balance, Reach and Cutting Authority

The Spyderco Rock Salt is a bold fixed-blade design created by long-time Spyderco collaborator Ed Schempp, whose work often blends striking visual lines with an ergonomics-first philosophy. Known for influential designs such as the Spyderco Persian, Schempp frequently incorporates flowing curves, forward finger choils and distinctive handle angles to maximise control during demanding cutting tasks. The Rock follows that same design language, presenting a substantial blade with a forward-leaning profile reminiscent of traditional chopping tools. Despite its size, the knife feels balanced and surprisingly manageable in hand, thanks largely to its carefully contoured handle and thoughtful weight distribution. The result is a large fixed blade that remains comfortable and controllable during extended outdoor or utility use.

This example has been used and carried, it bears many fine scratches on the blade, mainly from insertion and withdrawal from the sheath. The factory edge is unsharpened but is a little dull. Please reach out if you'd like me to sharpen it. No original box.

"The Rock Salt is a do-all fixed blade knife, from the kitchen, to the garden, to the boat, to the campsite, the Rock Salt has your back." - Mr. Narwhal

Ergonomics-Driven Design

Technically, the Rock Salt features a broad recurve blade measuring approximately 6.75 inches, ground from H-1 stainless steel and supported by a robust full-tang construction. At around 3/16-inch blade stock, the knife occupies a middle ground between lightweight machete-style tools and heavier chopping blades, offering a useful balance of cutting efficiency and durability. The recurve edge geometry enhances slicing power along the belly of the blade, while the swedged spine helps reduce overall weight without sacrificing strength. Bi-Directional textured handle scales are shaped to encourage multiple grip positions, including use of the forward choil for more precise work. Completing the package is a custom-moulded sheath designed to secure the knife safely while allowing straightforward access when needed, making the Rock a distinctive and capable example of Spyderco’s approach to large fixed-blade tools.
