The Russian Bear
The Cheburkov Bear is an impressive example of the distinctive design philosophy that has made Alexander Cheburkov's workshop one of the most respected names in Russian high-end folding knives. Established in Pavlovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Cheburkov workshop first exhibited its work in 2003 and has since developed a reputation for beautifully proportioned folders that combine traditional maker craftsmanship with sophisticated modern materials and engineering. The Bear is one of the larger and more recognisable designs in the Cheburkov catalogue, with its flowing profile, substantial titanium construction and carefully sculpted ergonomics giving it an unmistakable presence. This particularly rare configuration takes the Bear into genuinely exotic territory, pairing the design with a CPM S125V blade, a steel seldom encountered outside specialist and enthusiast-level knives. The result is a compelling combination of Russian knife-making character and one of the most extreme edge-retention steels ever put into a production folder.

Steel Exotica
CPM S125V is where this Bear really distinguishes itself. Developed by Crucible using its Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, S125V is an ultra-high-vanadium stainless tool steel containing approximately 12% vanadium, 14% chromium, 3.25% carbon and 2.5% molybdenum. The extraordinary vanadium content is central to its performance: during heat treatment, much of that vanadium forms exceptionally hard vanadium carbides throughout the steel's microstructure. These carbides provide outstanding resistance to abrasive wear, allowing a properly heat-treated S125V edge to retain its cutting characteristics through prolonged use far beyond what is possible with more conventional stainless steels. The CPM process also produces a particularly homogeneous microstructure, helping to make such a highly alloyed steel practical in a precision blade. The trade-off is equally important to understand: S125V is not chosen for easy maintenance. Its extreme carbide content and hardness make it considerably more challenging to sharpen than mainstream steels, and it rewards the enthusiast who is prepared to use appropriate diamond or CBN abrasives. In the Bear, that uncompromising steel is matched to a premium titanium folder with the smooth, refined construction for which Cheburkov is known, making this a particularly unusual and collectible interpretation of the model.
